NEW: 2018 Packaging Trends Book

Today we launched our latest trends book, 2018 Packaging Trends with commentary from senior leadership at Pantone, X-Rite, Esko, AVT, Videojet, Laetus and Danaher.

The global landscape is rapidly shifting to a digital landscape, opening up innovation opportunities for marketing and design departments at consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies. We highlight three of the eight major trends below:

The digital transformation of the value chain will continue in 2018. For consumer goods companies, digitizing the process by which they make products is key to improving operations and thereby lowering costs. Digital disruptors will shorten lead times and make way for a greater variety of print technologies; transferring analog processes to digital will allow brands to collect the data they need in order to better identify waste and root causes of risk.

With promises of higher quality, digital print will continue to rise. Digital printing can produce more design variations and therefore more targeted marketing. This will increase the need for automation tools to ensure quality and to capture performance data for both brand owners and converters.

In 2018, the Internet of Things (IoT) will impact how we make products. While major players such as Google and Amazon are already using the technology, soon it will be hard for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies to ignore as it provides critical insights to improve operations. These advancements won't be seen as luxuries or irrelevant for the industry, but instead as important efficiency detectors.
